Silence

I wrote this poem/prose sometime between 2001 and 2005…. I still can’t figure out what it truly means. Can you?

All I remember is that I wrote this piece and after a few hours I put the pen down and forgot about it.  Nevertheless, if my memory serves me well, three principal lessons I learnt during those “growing up” years were that people will always have negative criticisms to offer, you just have to carefully choose which ones to accept, that you can’t let the world or others define you, only you can find yourself, and thirdly, relationships (in general) come, go, or remain constant.  Another of my realizations, if you believe in God, was that He is always in the midst, even if you are not aware. With these in mind, I was able to filter the things that could only make me stronger and contributed to my wisdom. It wasn’t easy or perfect- but the lessons were learnt! The bottom line is that I can’t let the obstacles in life prevent me from living it.

Here goes, it’s called…..drum roll… Silence:

shhh…..

listen to the rhythm of my heart

Listen to its cry

Do you hear it?

Can you hear it?

shhh….

listen to the whispers of the winds

do you hear…

the sorrows

the sadness

the laughter

the joys

the gossip

of the people?

of our people?

of you and I?

shhh…

listen to the river of my life

do you hear it flowing?

going around sharp bends

falling over cliffs

and onto rocks

do you hear the splash?

flowing into the ocean

where my river meets yours

where our rivers are corrupted and purified by the salt of the ocean

do you hear the clash?

shhh…

listen to the voice of God

do you hear him?

the rattling of the leaves

amidst the rhythm of my heart

the whispers of the winds

the clashing of the rivers and oceans

the silence

listen to the abnormal rhythm of my heart

listen to its cry

can you hear it?

the growing sorrows

the grand sadness

the weak laughter

the trembling joys

the twisted gossip

shhh…

listen to the stream of my life

do you hear it trickling?

ceasing at every sharp bend

drop by drop over the cliffs

and accumulate on top of and between the rocks below

do you hear the drip?

no longer flow into the ocean

my river no longer meets yours

my river will never again be corrupted and purified by the salt of the ocean

do you hear the lessened clash?

shhh…

listen to the sun beating on my droplets on the rock

do you hear my vapours rising and softly singing as they rise?

do you hear anything?

anything?

the drumming of my heart?

the voices of the wind?

the flowing of my river?

the trickling of my stream?

nothing?

only silence?

Silence
